I've had a fascination with Japan for as long as I can remember. I had family who lived there for 35 years, and once a year they'd send us all a big box full of gifts: kimonos, stationary, candy, shrimp chips(!), stickers, toys, rice wallets, art, and so so many things. I was enthralled by how individual items were packaged in exquisite papers and envelopes. I even loved how the candies were wrapped. It was an art form in itself. Later when I grew up to become an artist I noticed that these little glimpses of Japan had slipped into my brain and helped to create my aesthetic. The colors, subjects, patterns. I'm happy when clothing designers also feel the pull toward this beautiful and deeply inspiring country
